When I first discovered Hyrox, I thought, “This is what I have been waiting for my entire athlete career.”
I thought I found what I was looking for when I learned about Spartan Race. At the time, I was coaching CrossFit and logging 40-50 miles per week. Spartan Race is great, but not exactly the blend of strength, speed, and endurance that I wanted. But, it was the closest thing, so I had to make do.
I went from finishing in the 20s and 30s at regional races to consistent podium threat and a 10th place finish in the 2019 US National series.
I tell you right now – I am a good runner. Always have been.
But it takes more than running to succeed in OCR. It is strength endurance, agility, grip and hand strength, high-end aerobic capacity, lots of volume, and a hefty dose of grit training to do well in OCR.
All of these areas are trainable and learnable. Through trial and error and seeking out some of the best coaches across multiple disciplines, I figured out how to transform myself and the athletes I coach into OCR beasts.
But I knew it wasn’t exactly what I wanted.
Hyrox is it. Hyrox is what I’ve been training for this whole time. I thought I’d be an instant success.
I was wrong. Really wrong.
My first attempt wasn’t a complete disaster, but it was humbling. I had real work to do.
Hybrid Racing isn’t only about high-end endurance and being familiar with CrossFit and strength movement.
It is its own beast. But I was determined.
I went to the lab and started to get to work. Applying the principles, I have learned in my 10+ years as an endurance coach, CrossFit coach, and personal trainer.
I got stronger, better at the movements, and stayed fast. I added 40 lbs to my squat and deadlift and dropped 7 minutes from my time in just over 6 months, going from 1:07:22 to 1:00:35 and a 7th place finish at the Elite World Championships in Las Vegas.
As a result, I learned what work moves the needle and what is a waste of time. Now I’ve applied these methods to each workout in this group.
The last thing you should know is this group of athletes is not f*cking around.

A full gym is always ideal with all the HYROX equipment.
Each workout will provide some variation that will help you adapt the program. You will be lifting heavy – so having some resistance training tools is a must.
The training will continuously change stimulus. When it comes to training everything will work for a short amount of time. So the structure of the training will change every 4-6 weeks. You can expected to see hard and easy runs, heavy lifts, and metcon style training consistently throughout the weeks and months. But the organization and structure will change to achieve the specific goals.
