If You Don’t Compete – You Won’t Grow

Strength training for Spartan Race

How competition translates to all aspects of life.

I am a competitive person

Being a competitive person was enough for me to train hard for over a decade.

But why I am competitive?

I’ve thought about it a lot over the years and found that my reason was unhealthy.

My self-worth was tied to my race results and athletic accomplishments which lead to some rocky issues with my temper and some harmful physical and mental habits.

So I worked on it, and now things are much better for me and everyone around me.

But I still want to train hard and compete like a maniac.

So WTF? I should be over this, right?

But I still do it. Every single day.

So I had to ask myself again. The same way I ask it to every perspective athlete I coach.

Why do you want to get faster?

And it boils down to one thing…

Growth.

Hard things, failure, and accomplish all facilitate growth.

And running is f*cking hard.

Overcoming hard things builds confidence to take on the next hard thing. Completing hard things break down barriers that are in your way.

Completing a marathon or running a PR will make you wonder what else you can do. And not just as an athlete, but at work, school, and at home.

Here is an article on how to train for your first marathon.

This is why you need to make goals and work toward breaking them. Set a scary goal – something that you know will be hard.

The sooner you can cross off your goal, the sooner you can make another and continue to grow.

And there are many ways to reach your goals once they are set. You can figure it out on your own, or you can seek the help of others who have knowledge and experience.

This is how a coach and mentor can expedite your growth.

Which is why I became an endurance coach. I wanted to help people learn what they are capable of in sport and beyond. I have been fortunate enough to have been helped hundreds of athletes reach grow closer to their potential.
